I guess, that's right, but I'm sure the writers could came with something else.

There isn't really a way to be finished with a major character without actually killing them. It seems that major characters never really leave the show permanently unless the are killed off. But then again, that's not even true because of Tony.

He wasn't really left of course. He was just out for a season.

I thought David Palmer was finished with 24 when he didn't run for re-election at the end of season 3.  The writers managed to squeek out a plausible reason for him to be around in season 4.  Still they couldn't do that every season.  It was sad to see him go but a lot better than seeing him inserted into the following seasons for some flimsy reason or another.

I didn't care for the killing of of Michelle, I've wondered what the actress who played her felt about that.  Especially now that Tony's been reintroduced?

On a side note.  The one thing I really don't care for is the way the U.S. presidents are having such a rapid turn over rate.  8 presidents in only 7 (broadcast) years.  Between all the successful terrorist attacks in the U.S. (come on...TWO nuclear detonations), along with the corrupt and or inept presidents & vice presiddents hardly make the U.S. seem any safer than the Gaza Strip.  Don't get me wrong, I love 24 but when you watch all seven seasons back to back, as I just have,  the U.S. seems somewhat unprotected.
