Was he really needed? Probably not. If the writers had preferred it, the could've had some new young gun as the director of CTU...but they wanted George. When you think about it, not many characters during a season of 24 were really needed. They were simply in the show because the writers felt they added something good. And usually, the writers are spot on about that. So, George wasn't a necessity...but he was a damn good addition.

Just finished the episode where he died.
He was definitely needed. He's my favourite character besides Jack.
Only Xander could've played George. I love it. Season 2 wouldn't be nearly as good if it wasn't for Mason.
And it proved to me that Jack talking to Kim from the plane is the saddest 24 moment ever. The George/Jack moments after that was great too.

The second season wouldnt have been the same without George... Had some powerful scenes in it... It was quite sad when he saw he son and the son didnt quite know what to make from it all

I think he was one of the best characters in that season. Especially when he's trying to leave the city at the beginning .... then after he gets infected, he ask the MD "Am I contagious?"
That's when you knew he was coming back, and ready to fight this terrrorist attack full speed ahead.
season 2 is gorge mason he was the best thing about season 2

I don't think the death of a new CTU director would have had the same impact as that of George's and his arc throughout season two was so tremendously done that I would have hated another actor doing it, they could never have done it as well as Xander Berkley.

Mason added so much to the story: after Jack, he's my favourite character in Day 2. Not so much in Day 1, to be honest... he was annoying then. But in Day 2, he shows growth, we learn more about him, and I think he's a tragic figure like Ryan Chapelle: everyone hates him, but in the end, his exit makes you sympathise... and cry.
That's so true! At season one I really couldn't stand Mason, but he won my sympathy, he became so real... I really cried when it happend
For me Chapelle is another story, it was sad when

but when this episode was over I almost "forgot" about him.
