This was supposed to be the day when Sri Lanka’s batsmen were supposed to make merry and toy around with an inexperienced associate attack. Instead, they stumbled and struggled to a nine-run win over Ireland on Sunday in this T20 World Cup 2009.
Chasing 145 for an upset, Ireland got off to a steady start – their openers taking on the Sri Lankan bowling with some quality shots and luck. Niall O’Brian and William Porterfield began well, making good use of every scoring opportunity.
Jayasuriya, played the more sedate role, giving the strike to Jayawardene whenever possible. Jayawardene was the aggressor, playing some of the most delightful shots, coupled with deft touches on his way to a 53-ball 78. |
